Greetings Family and Friends. This September 16th is the date for the 11th annual Pedaling for Payson fundraiser for the Concord Hospital Center for Cancer Care. It is also the fourth year that the mountain bike ride will be held as part of this event. I have volunteered to help coordinate the mountain bike ride since the beginning which I am very proud of. I am writing once again to ask for your support with my efforts to raise important funds for families dealing with the treatment of this terrible disease.
Why do I do this? This fundraising event is very important to me for a number of reasons. The primary reason is that the donations help people and families at a very difficult time in their lives dealing with treatment of cancer. The funds that you contribute will go to a very special cause: helping patients at Concord Hospital Payson Center for Cancer Care get the support and guidance they need for recovery. Funds raised go, first of all, toward providing items like gas cards (so that patients and family members can get to and from treatments) and grocery cards (so they can eat and keep strong). Second, funds raised fund the position of a full time “nurse navigator” position. If you are not familiar with a nurse navigator it is a skilled staff member who helps financially and emotionally stressed patients and their families get the medical and non-medical support they need for their treatment and recovery. Examples include dealing with coordinating doctor appointments, prescriptions, insurance and emotional support to name a few.
This year just like every one of the last 4 years we have spent many, many hours attending meetings, planning, maintaining and building new trails and preparing for the day of this event. In our volunteer corps is a cancer survivor who received support from Pedaling for Payson during his treatment and recovery. He has shared firsthand how much he appreciated the help from Pedaling for Payson and what it meant to him and his family. That is why we do this every year!
This event allows me to give back and help others while doing something I enjoy. I often look around and truly appreciate how lucky we are and need to be thankful for all that we have. That is not the case for many people dealing with this horrible disease.
I totally understand we all have obligations that may make it difficult to help out. No amount is too small. If nothing else a small contribution says you support our efforts. Please consider making a donation if you can.
